GeneSight® Testing

A personalized option for medication management.

At our practice, we understand that finding the right psychiatric medication can sometimes take trial and error. That’s why we offer GeneSight® testing as an optional tool to help guide treatment decisions when it makes sense clinically.

This test isn’t necessary for everyone, but in some cases, it can provide helpful genetic information that supports a more personalized approach to medication management.

What Is GeneSight?

GeneSight is a pharmacogenetic test — meaning it analyzes how your genes may affect your response to certain psychiatric medications. It can help us understand:

  • Which medications may be more likely to work well for you

  • Which ones may carry a higher risk of side effects

  • How your body may metabolize different medications

GeneSight doesn’t diagnose conditions, and it doesn’t replace our clinical judgment — but it can be a useful tool when a patient has had limited success with medications in the past or is sensitive to side effects.

When Do We Use It?

We may recommend GeneSight testing if:

  • You’ve tried multiple psychiatric medications without the desired outcome

  • You’ve experienced significant side effects or difficulty tolerating medication

  • You’re just starting treatment and want to take a more individualized approach

If you're curious whether GeneSight is appropriate for your situation, just let us know during your appointment — we’ll be happy to talk through it with you.

Insurance & Cost Information

GeneSight is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare, depending on your diagnosis and medical need.

To check your coverage:

  • Use GeneSight’s online cost estimator

  • Or just ask us — we can help you verify coverage and explain any potential out-of-pocket costs

Worried about cost? GeneSight offers financial assistance for patients who qualify.

How It Works

The testing process is quick and easy:

  1. We collect a cheek swab sample in our office — completely non-invasive and painless

  2. Your sample is sent to the GeneSight lab, where your genes are analyzed in relation to various psychiatric medications

  3. We receive results in about 5–7 days, and your provider will review the report with you in detail

Together, we’ll use the results — along with your history, symptoms, and preferences — to make more informed decisions about your medication plan.

Let’s Decide Together

GeneSight is just one of the tools we may use to support your mental health journey. It’s not something we use with every patient — but when it’s appropriate, it can help us tailor your care more precisely.
